Hi, my daughter is 15 and has a 45 degree lumbar curve, but she is functioning completely normally, swims, plays netball etc. We have seen a specialist who has said that she has stopped growing so bracing is not going to help, he just wants to monitor at present, but really, the only thing spine specialists offer is monitoring and surgery, they are not very open to other options. We have started Schroth physio and this has given my daughter a better sense that she has some control over the scoliosis and there is a visible change in her posture when she attends - it is expensive and I am not convinced yet that it is any better than just keeping fit and living as normally as possible. I am also going to get her to see a Feldenkrais practitioner, their approach is to maximise function whatever the body is doing. I personally want to avoid surgery for my daughter if at all possible, I am not convinced that a correction of the curve necessarily relates to improved function, especially when she is functioning so well despite a large curve. Hope this helps. It is good to discuss these things.

Hi Jan, my daughter got to about 45 degrees before we found someone who would provide her with a brace. It has had positive results and she hasn't grown since she has worn it (she is almost 14). Going by her x-rays she only has about 2% growth left. Her curve is down to 15 degrees. She also does the schroth method and I think this has helped her a lot. My concern for your daughter would be in the future as the curves are supposed to increase later in life. Can she be fitted with a brace? My daughter's specialist said a brace wouldn't help her and her only option was surgery. I am glad we proved him wrong. Good luck with it all!

Thanks for your reply. Both the specialists we went to said that a brace would not help once she had stopped growing, but I might ask around a bit more. The specialist is now suggesting surgery, but I am very very reluctant as it will be a 5 level fusion. I think my daughter and I are both on a journey of decision making which might take some time!
