Default Can surgery help me?

I am 39 and have congenital s curve in my neck with hemivertebra, c curve in lower back, with the spine between the 2 now curving too. I attended (what was then) Adelaide Childrens Hospital from 6mths old to 15 yrs when told as bone fusion occurred naturally thru my teens they couldn't help me. I've had 3 children in last 9yrs and am coming onto 12yrs on opioids etc. I now live in constant pain with a bonus of fentanyl dependence with side effects that are sometimes worse than the back pain. Maybe. I have a wonderful GP who has kept me going this far, but there has to be something more I can do? My GP has tried different methods/meds, I've been to a Pain Management Clinic that didn't even look at my scans, only treated me for depression. Made me worse and angry on top. I now have a good therapist, along with a great GP, but I can still see my expiry date looming closer and closer. What, if anything, can u suggest?

Thank you for your enquiry.

Clearly, you have a complicated spinal problem and it would be most inadvisable for me to offer advice on the basis of the information provided. However, in complex, long-standing cases it is often very useful to have an assessment by a scoliosis specialist who has not previously been involved in the patient's care. I suggest this is one avenue that you could pursue.

Please show this reply to your family doctor and seek a referral to a qualified scoliosis specialist. There is a directory of persons with suitable qualifications on our website.

I trust this suggestion is helpful.

Thanks for the reply. I have given this site address to my GP and he gave me a referral to a specialist. I now have to wait for the clinic to contact me which could be up to 4 weeks as we apparently only have one clinic for scoliosis here in Adelaide. Then up to 2 years for the actual first appt! My GP recognized all the specialists listed for SA on this site and referred me to the public hospital clinic. I'm having a bad stretch at present and even dialed lifeline a couple of times but didn't put the calls through. I'm tired now, but I'm still rational and I know why I'm depressed, I know what I need to do to pull myself out of it, but having coping mechanisms doesn't help too much after years of pain when you just don't have the strength. My children keep me going, and will do so until I can't look after myself anymore. I just wish I had a happy ending like the others on this site. I'm now holding out for the scoliosis/orths clinic to call and hopefully book me in ASAP.
Thank you for this forum. It's given me a little more hope that I may be able to get better - eventually!
Cheers
Nat
