Well here we are 16 months on from my very first post on this forum.
My daughter is now just about to turn 16. She has been doing Schroth physio which has helped her posture and her awareness of the things that she can do to help. She remains fit and active, playing netball, tennis and gym and is leading a very normal life. But overall, the curve will still do what it is going to do. So our recent XRays show double major curve 46 degrees lumbar and 37 degrees thoracic. This is a 4 degrees progression of the lumbar curve and 9 degree progression of the thoracic curve. She has stopped growing now, so the key is, will the curve continue to progress after growth has stopped. Both the surgeons we have consulted think that it will continue to progress and are recommending surgery. My daughter complains about her right hip prominence and the asymmetry at the waist, she doesn't have a rib hump though but I have noticed the shoulder blade becoming a bit more prominent. She also gets some low back pain after standing for a long time. Now to decide - surgery or not??? Of to the specialist tomorrow to discuss all the details and ask lots of questions. It is also a question of timing with VCE starting next year. Any advice or comments welcome. Good luck to all of you going through similiar decisions. Thanks. |

Hi Jan,
Good luck with it all. We found our son also had some lower back pain after lots of sports or standing for long periods of time and one hip was sitting higher than the other. He now has his shoe orthotics built up on the side that was sitting lower so both hips are now in line and that has made a huge difference to him. Pain is barely any now and the curvatures are doing well and holding. That might be worth looking into. My son plays a lot of basketball and very sporty and this alignment of the hips has been a major plus for him. His specialist on his first visit addressed this straight up and it has really been beneficial. It can be tricky to find a good orthotist though, luckily we already had a very good orthotist and he has done wonders with the amount of build up he required and the specialist actually dictated the amount required and checks this regularly at every appointment and has it adjusted if need be. HI Jan,
This is my very first post. My daughter has just been diagnosed last week. We're flooded with information. She's only 10 and has a lot of growing to do. 36 deg. We've ordered a 'scolibrace' today and know i'm second guessing myself. The first thing we noticed (and triggered our examinations) was her one hip was higher than the other a few months ago. The specialists believe this is a direct side affect of the scoliosis - i'm not convinced. Who did you go and see for the inserts and in which city. We're willing to travel. regards Rene |
