Default Please give me guidance. I want a fusion

Hi there, this is my first post but i really want some opinions and would love if someone who has a similar story to me to share their experience

I turned 19 years old in April this year and my back gives me so much pain that im suffering depression from it and in severe pain from it.

I was diagnosed with scoliosis and scheuermanns disease after collapsing in grade 6 from back pain at age 10. Got an x-ray and then got sent to a hospital to go to a surgeon and orthapedics. They said i needed a full milwauke brace that goes also around my neck.

I wore that for about 12 months and went to the hospital all together for about 4 or so years, got constant x-rays/MRIs and they decided not to give me surgery as they said it might not even take away the oain and im too young. I got sent to the pain management clinic for a year.

So im 19 now, i have tried swimming, osteo, prescription pain pills like tramadol etc, physio, remedial massage, gave up all sports, etc and i still have constant pain.

My back hurts so much that it burns and goes numb. My legs now go numb and get pins and needles from my torso down. I cant walk for more than 40 mins as my right side starts to stop working, and bad pain in my legs and obviously back. I struggle to breath if i force myself in a more upright position and i can feel my ribs have caved in because of the curve and therefore my stooped over look. I get headaches and shoulder/neck aches. It is all so constant and i just feel like a 80 year old woman.

When i turned 17 i couldnt keep going to the same specialist, havent been there for about 2 years so got recently transferred to an adult one. Appointment in a month+

I just want some hope or guidance as im really getting worried about myself and my future

Thank you for taking the time to read this

Emma, thank you for your post. It sounds as if you have had a very difficult time.

Pain is common in both Scheuermann's kyphosis and scoliosis, but the pain is usually no more than a nuisance. In some cases, it can be much worse and the reasons for this can be complex.

Surgery can pretty reliably correct the back deformity, but the relief of severe pain is less predictable. Pain is usually better, but it may even be worse after a spinal operation. That is why other things like exercise and pain management should be tried before proceeding with surgery.

Depression can also occur with persistent pain and it is important to deal with this too.

I would recommend that you look on our website for scoliosis surgeons nearest to where you live. Finding a surgeon who can give you advice on your spine and recommend ways to deal with pain and depression is important. This will involve other specialists, like pain teams.

A good local general practitioner is also very important in coordinating your care.

I hope this has been of some help.
