Default Post-op update

Hi everyone,
I'm writing this from our hospital room;Lily had her surgery last Thursday. That day was traumatic for us inasmuch as we had to hand over her care to virtual strangers, but they were just superb in their care, skill and empathy for our distress. She had T2-L1 fused, which took just over 6hours.
Lily remembers nothing fortunately. She sat up yesterday for the first time, and today she walked and sat in a chair. Such simple things but they are huge milestones right now. She has had some nausea with the change from IV analgesia to tablets, but that's being managed. Already she seems taller and straighter!
No doubt there are still some ordinary days ahead of us with her rehab at home, but we are all happy with the decision to have the surgery. For anyone contemplating it we can say that the waiting was worse than the reality.

Hi Fiona,
Great to hear that Lily is doing well. You all must be so relieved that the operation is over. We are still in the waiting stage for our 12 year old Daughter who will be going to have her op in just under 1 month. As you have mentioned waiting is the worst. Will be so happy when we have reached the stage Lily is at. All the best. Brett. NSW

Hi Fiona,
Thanks for sharing your experience. Great to hear good news and well done to a very brave girl!
We are still waiting to see specialists in 5 weeks and then make decisions re surgery. The waiting is hard,
Liz

Oh Fiona...I feel so relieved for you! It's such a big thing to get "that day" over and done with, and I agree completely - the worst part is when your child is being wheeled in to the theatre. Each day from here on will be a little step closer to Lily getting back to her old self again (but with a new back!).

Liz is right...brave indeed! Hope you can manage to get some rest in there yourself - it's a very tiring time in hospital.

Take care and thanks for keeping us all posted!

Helen

Hi Fiona, that's a fantastic update - brought back the memories as well. One word of advice - take care of yourself as well as your daughter. For the first 6 weeks, she will probably rely on you and your family a lot and it is important that you get your rest as well. Take care and best wishes to your daughter for an amazing recovery. RB
