Default Positioning support for age-8

Child has no brace, requiring wheelchair and alternative seating to support posture. Originally set for surgery at Aged 14, specialist now looking at maybe correction in 2 years.
What could support seating on floor? Child's only mobiltyi is bottom scooting, would like to support seating on the floor, but free to move around when she wants to.

Thank you for your enquiry but without more information it is impossible to comment authoritatively. However, some general remarks.

From what you have stated the child in question probably has profound muscular weakness and this could have arisen from many different causes. Generally speaking, if weakness is profound, say as might occur in polio or after spinal cord injury, stabilisation of the spine is usually delayed until about ten years of age, otherwise there can be undesirable side effects. It is important for a child such as you have described to have a degree of mobility. It is tempting to put such a patient in a brace but then mobility is often severely impaired.

One reason to bring forward surgical intervention is if a curvature is becoming rigid. It is simple to test for this in a small child. If he/she is lifted vertically underneath the arms then the spine will become straight if there is no contracture.

It is suggested that you make an appointment to discuss the case with the treating doctor.

I trust this limited information is helpful.
