Default Rib removal

Hi there.

My son is 15 and is due to have surgery in around four weeks. The surgeon said he'll need to have about 5 ribs removed to try and sort his rib hump out. Do you know if this means a longer stay in ICU or in hospital and if his pain will be much worse? Also how long does it take for the ribs to grow back?

Thanks.

Thank you for your questions. In general, these are best answered by your son's surgeon as individual surgical techniques differ. However, the partial rib removal or resection, known as a thoracoplasty is not associated with more pain or a longer hospital stay. The removed section of rib usually grows back within 6 months.

Hope this is helpful.
