Default Costing of operation with Private Health Care - Brisbane

Hi I was wondering if people could please give me an idea of what out of pocket expenses they incurred for Thoracoscopic Scoliosis Surgery in Brisbane.

My Daughter requires Right T5-L1 Endoscopic Correction & I've been quoted $14,000 - $16,500 for out of pocket (Depending on what anaesthetist we use)

We have full Medibank Private coverage too.

Thank you

Is that what Medibank told you? Did you take the quote from the surgeon to them? Sounds like a lot to pay out of your own pockets

I had two separate surgeries; one for the fusion, then a stand alone thoracoplasty a year later. The overall cost was about $40,000 for both and my out of pocket were about $1500. That was for the hospital admission fees and x-rays/mri that were not completely covered by Medicare.

My health insurance covered just about everything. I went to them before the surgeries to get a very firm idea of what that they would cover.

It is reassuring to know exactly what you are needing to pay for before the surgery. That is stressful enough xxx

Hi Christine, that was what the doctors quote came in at.
The doctors quoted just over $20,000, which does not include hospital or anaesthetist.

The doctors quote stated we'd have a patient liability of just over $14,000 &
"The PATIENT LIABILITY is your out of pocket expense and is not claimable from Medicare or your Health Fund."

That's why I'm asking.

Everyone else has said that it should be approx $1500- $2000 out of pocket, his quote says $14,000 out of pocket & he wants 50% to book the op & remainder prior.

Thanks

I nearly fell off my chair when I read this!!!

My surgeon didn't charge me that and have never heard of it before. Maybe it is a new thing that surgeons are doing. Gosh. That is a huge lot of money.

There are a few forum members from Brisbane, maybe someone has had the same item in their quote and hopefully they will see your post.

I had corrective surgery last year in a Private Melbourne Hospital for 11 days with NIB the surgery cost $46,228.75 I was out of pocket $664.25 plus my $500 excess. The out of pocket was for xrays etc. My surgeon charged within the gap ask for the item number from your surgeon and call your Health Provider to confirm.

Hello,
I have been quoted $14,000 out of pocket for fusion surgery in Qld.
Plus some $4,000 to bring my basic health cover up to full cover.
Unfortunately out f my reach.
Regards,
Dennis

Thumbs up Re: Costing of operation with Private Health Care - Brisbane

Happy to say that we just had a 2nd opinion today & are pencilled in for the op in just over a fortnight. Really happy that we're going down this path.

I'll send you a message Dennis

That's great if you have had a better outcome re costs. Our son had surgery in Sydney five years and with full health cover we had extra costs of $10,000. Best for his health but not easy on the family budget! All the best for the surgery.

Talking Re: Costing of operation with Private Health Care - Brisbane

My daughter had the op yesterday & we're really wrapped with the outcome.
Out of pocket will come to just under $4000 at a top notch private hospital with her own room etc.
HUGE difference.

Not only was the cost about a quarter of the other quote, BUT the result is 10x better.

So glad I got a 2nd opinion.
If anyone ever wants my opinion or more info on who we saw, just send me a message, I'm quite happy to pass it on.

Thanks

Glad to hear the surgery went well and that the costs were much less than expected. Hope she is continuing to make good progress
Cheers
