Hi All,

I'm new hear - this is my first post!

My daughter is 2 and has early onset scoliosis with a 70 degree curve which is currently being managed with a brace (casted every 3 months under general). The current plan is for her condition to be managed with a brace until she is big enough to have MAGEC rod surgery (at around 4/5 years old).

We currently live in the UK where MAGEC surgery is performed however we are planning on moving back to Australia in 2018. Please could you tell me if MAGEC surgery is performed in Australia and any further information i.e;

Which states offer the surgery? Pre-requisites for surgery etc...

Thanks in advance for any help you could give us :)

The MAGEC system is in use in Australia and surgeons working in the major children's hospitals are experienced in the technique. Most centres also provide casting as treatment for early onset scoliosis.

All the best,

Hi Dr S,

Thank you very much for your reply.

Can I ask, is the surgery offered to all eligible candidates or does the child have to have specific criteria like other underlying medical conditions or intolerance to general anaesthetic for example?

That is not the case in the uk but I have seen mentioned in earlier commentary I have found online regarding Magec.

Thanks once again

Dear LLL,

There are no specific restrictions to the use of MAGEC rods in Australia. That being said, it used for children with significant growth remaining - usually those under 11 years of age.

Thanks Dr S for your reply.

In general how long does it take to get a referral to see a consultant?

My daughter is under a bracing plan in the uk and she has a new brace fitted under general anaesthetic ever 6 months.

If we went to see a GP when we arrive in Australia, could you please give me a rough idea of how long we would need to wait to get her seen. I'm concerned about continuity of the bracing.

Thanks in advance for your advice, much appreciated.

To establish an idea of waiting time, may I suggest you phone or email a specialist listed in our Specialist Directory in the State you will be moving to in Australia.
