Hi, my 13yr old daughter had surgery about a month ago to correct 2x 70 degree curves. Post op xray showed an amazing result of 2x 14 degrees. :) We were so happy with the result. However the rods appeared to be on an angle on the xray and she felt one leg seemed longer than the other...in the last month she become quite bent forward and slanting to one side hips are uneven so her legs still seem uneven. If she bends her knees her back seems straighter yet this hurts her to do. Is this common? and the main question is, is there a possibility she will have more surgery? We are seeing the surgeon again soon but I want to be prepared as she has special needs and is terrified of more surgery poor darling.

Thank you for your question. Your daughter had a good correction of the scoliosis. The change in her posture might be due to her control of balance needing to adjust. This will tend to improve with time. However, it could also be due to mechanical imbalance of her spine.

This might be caused by loosening of implants or difficulty in achieving proper spinal balance during surgery. It is important to see her surgeon soon. Clinical assessment and X-rays will help sort the problem out. Repeat surgery is rarely needed, but if implants have loosened a further operation (not a large as the first) might be necessary.
