Hi Dr Scoliosis,

Can you please tell me how long you would expect it to take for a compensatory lumbar curve to correct fully after a thoracic fusion (T4-T12). Is it instantly corrected during surgery or does it take time?

Thank you
Sonia

Thank you for your question. Generally speaking, compensatory curves, if they are going to resolve spontaneously, do so rather slowly.

The potential for resolution can be approximately gauged by the bending films which are usually taken pre-operatively.

From your post back in 2010 it would seem that your daughter had a form of curvature which is known as the double major pattern. The distinguishing feature of this type of curve is that both the thoracic and lumbar components are almost always equal in degree.

You should discuss the matter with Rach's surgeon at your next visit.
