View Full Version : Should I get surgery?

Diagnosed with scoliosis when I was twelve and a half. Initial curves were a right thoracic of 28 degrees and a lumbar of 22 degrees. Wore a Boston brace for two and a half years. Had x-rays last month and my curve increased to a right thoracic 42 degree. I recently turned sixteen and I experience discomfort and pain from sitting or standing up for a certain period of time. My next appointment is in March.

Thank you for your enquiry. Regrettably, one would need a great deal more information about your curve before any advice can be given. However, it is clear that you need to see a spinal specialist and you should return to the clinic where you were initially managed with a brace.

A right thoracic curve of 42 degrees at the age of 16 is, in itself, not a major problem. Growth tails off at or about 15 years of age in girls and somewhat later in boys. Hence, if you are a member of the fair sex it is probable that your growth has virtually ceased. Very little growth takes place between 15 and 18 years of age in girls and certainly there would be no place for reinstituting a bracing program at 16 years of age.

The fact that you have some symptoms is also an indication for further assessment.

I trust these comments are helpful.
