My 14 year old daughter has a right thoracic curve of 38 degrees and a left lumbar curve measuring 35 degrees. She does yoga. Can you advise whether some of the twists that are done in yoga are not suitable for people with scoliosis, or if they are okay? Thank you.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Inasmuch as your daughter has a right thoracic/left lumbar curve pattern where the degree of curvature is all but the same in the two curves, I presume she has a pattern called the double curve which is a recognised part of the spectrum of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. May I suggest that you go to our website and look at the section About Scoliosis (http://www.scoliosis-australia.org/scoliosis/about_scoliosis.html) where the classification is dealt with in some detail.

For a 14 year old girl with the degree of curvature you have described we would not put any particular restrictions on their physical activities. You should however check with the doctor under whose care your daughter presently is being observed.

I trust this information is helpful.
