You have posed a very difficult question which is nigh impossible to answer without more details and an examination together with the relevant imaging studies.

Notwithstanding the above remarks, some general comments are in order. Chronic back pain may be linked with the failure of a fusion to heal and sometimes with instrumentation which has broken. If instrumentation does break this is an indicator of a failure of fusion, the metal failing because of constant micro-movement.

In some instances chronic pain may be linked with wear and tear changes adjacent to or below the fused segment of the spine.

Any patient with chronic pain following a scoliosis correction should seek the advices of a scoliosis specialist and it is suggested that you be referred to one of the specialists listed in the directory (http://www.scoliosis-australia.org/scoliosis/scoliosis_specialists.html) on this website. Of course you would require a referral from your doctor. If there are difficulties obtaining an appointment in the public hospital clinic, one way to expedite an appointment is for the family doctor to contact the specialist directly and for he/she to request an early review.
