Hi ! this is my first post. My name is Joolz, late forties, living in the Gold Coast, married with two children. I have severe scoliosis and hate the way I look. It is such a relief to have found this site and know there are others in the same boat. We were going on holidays recently to celebrate my daughter's 21st and I was in a real panick trying to find something to wear. You know what I mean ! There were going to be photos and I didn't want my back to be too obvious. I had been to every shop I could think of with no success and was on the way home feeling very upset when I wandered into Rockmans. I found a sleeveless dress in a black, white and red pattern. The left side shoulder had to be adjusted but it really hid my scoliosis very well. The pattern was the secret, I think. Normally I wear shrugs and cardigans with everything and it gets too hot here in Qld but with this dress I didn't need one. The belt it came with was narrow, so I went somewhere else and brought a wider one which suited me better and I was SO happy I felt like crying. The photos turned out really well and it was SUCH a relief to sort of blend in with the crowd, if you know what I mean. Best wishes, from Joolz.

Thumbs up Re: I'm wearing?

Hi Joolz,

hoorah! your first post, thank you. great idea about patterns..

what i love about winter is the fact that there are heaps of great belts about. The waists of braces can be a bit clunky with the bolts on the front, but with a belt you can draw attendtion to a great accessory instead of the brace.

anyone else want to add some tips?

Hey there,
When leash wore her brace it was most noticeable at the top when she bent slightly forward .... We hid this by her wearing hood tops!
Lucky it was fashionable to have hoods even on short sleeve tops!
Jeans were a problem so leggings became the norm!
Also for rubbing under the arms for the brace we would use shoulder pads purchased from spotlight!
Leash gave her brace a name... Me-shell!!
Xx

Hi Chic Chick and Patricia and everyone,

It is so good to have someone to talk to about scoliosis and what to wear! People who understand . So happy I have found you. Patricia is spot on about hoodies ! I love winter because I wear hoodies nearly every day and the hood covers the hump on my back really well.

I have a close relative who designs tee shirts. She very kindly gives me them all the time as presents and they are lovely and I wear them to support her but I feel very self concious about the back. Any ideas at all on how to look better in a tee shirt ?

Thanks and good wishes from Joolz

guys,

thanks for responding, this is great for everyone!!

one tip for under the brace to stop the rubbing is bonds boys singlets.... not super pretty but they work and you can't see them. i like the idea of the shoulder pads on the sides.

leggins are awesome and by far the best tip for winter dressing...

as for t-shirts, how about a long sleeved top with a t-shirt over the top, the bottom one will cover the brace and the top one for fun and patterns?
